Abhyanga- Ayurvedic Oil Massage
Abhyanga- Ayurvedic Oil Massage
The practice of Abhyanga, an Ayurvedic oil massage, is adopted for healing, relaxation, and as a treatment for various diseases. This systematic rubbing and manipulation of the body help prevent stiffness, promote circulation, and maintain positive health. Abhyanga involves applying oil to the skin and massaging in specific directions. This technique improves blood circulation, facilitates the removal of toxins, relieves fatigue, enhances the musculoskeletal system's functioning, and alleviates stiffness and heaviness in the body, resulting in a feeling of lightness. It is recommended to practice Abhyanga in the direction of hair growth.
The mechanism of action
involves affecting various systems of the body, such as the circulatory,
nervous, metabolic, respiratory, and lymphatic systems. The massage creates
osmotic pressure, causing internal fluid to move within the skin. This pressure
forces out toxins, which are then expelled from the body through circulation
and excretion processes.
Abhyanga's beneficial
effects include cleansing dirt, improving body complexion, maintaining skin
elasticity, restoring natural immunity, rejuvenating body tissues, preventing
the aging process, alleviating Vata and Kapha doshas, reducing the effects of trauma,
overcoming anxiety and stress, relaxing muscles, improving physical strength,
promoting the excellence of body tissues, beautifying the body figure, inducing
sound sleep, improving eyesight, and nourishing the body tissues, thereby
prolonging one's lifespan. The choice of oil is essential, as it should be
suitable for the individual's constitution (Prakriti) or tailored to specific
illnesses. Regular practice of Abhyanga is recommended for maintaining overall
well-being, and when applied with the right oil, it becomes a therapeutic
intervention for various health conditions.
